Stairwells are notorious for excessive echo and reverberation due to their hard surfaces and vertical geometry. This makes communication difficult and causes discomfort in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. Installing perforated sound absorbing panels along stairwell walls and ceilings is a proven solution to reduce echo, improve speech clarity, and enhance safety and acoustic privacy.
Vertical Echo Chamber: Stairwells act as resonant tubes amplifying mid- and high-frequency sounds.
Safety & Accessibility: Poor acoustics hinder emergency instructions and auditory awareness.
Noise Transfer: Sound easily travels from one floor to another through untreated stairwells.
Material: Perforated MDF or plywood, fire-retardant treated, with micro-perforations (3–6 mm).
Installation Height: Panels should extend from floor to ceiling or be placed at reflection points.
Backing Cavity: 40–75 mm filled with mineral wool or acoustic foam to absorb speech frequencies.
Perforation Ratio: 7%–12% provides effective reverberation control across wide bandwidths.
Surface Coating: Durable, anti-scratch UV finish suitable for high-traffic public areas.
ISO 10534-2: Tube method for measuring acoustic absorption.
MDPI Acoustic Panel Review: Perforated systems applied in stairwells reduced RT60 by 55%.
ASTM E84: Fire rating requirement for vertical panel installations.
A 12-floor commercial stairwell had significant echo problems. Designers installed fire-rated MDF panels (18 mm thick) with a 9 mm perforation and 60 mm rockwool backing. Post-installation tests showed reverberation time dropped from 2.4 s to 0.9 s. Footfall noise and voice transfer between floors were also significantly reduced.
Use full-height vertical slats for safety and performance.
Apply corner panels to eliminate sound concentration zones.
Match wood veneer to surrounding finishes for aesthetic consistency.
