Robotics testing centers must balance mechanical experimentation with worker safety—particularly in controlling mechanical noise. This article explores how perforated aluminum sheets were used to construct acoustic enclosures for collaborative robot cells at a German automation lab.
Collaborative robots generate cyclic motion noise and fan-driven vibrations during endurance tests. The lab required both acoustic suppression and line-of-sight for remote monitoring. Acoustic perforated panels were selected for this dual function.
Wall frames used 2.2mm perforated aluminum sheet (28% perforation), bonded to acoustic PET foam. Corner posts integrated transparent polycarbonate for observation. Floors were fitted with anti-slip perforated panels for vibration isolation and airflow.
Reverberation time dropped from 1.6s to 0.55s. ISO-compliant testing using ISO 11690 and ASTM C423 confirmed a 19dB(A) noise reduction at the boundary.
Similar acoustic systems have been installed in vision-guided robotic labs, industrial mechatronic training rooms, and test hoods for drone propeller cells.
