From disaster response to military operations, mobile command centers require not only data infrastructure and mobility but also an acoustically controlled environment. Echo, vibration, and equipment hum can severely affect team coordination and real-time communication. To counter this, engineers increasingly turn to perforated aluminum sheets for their blend of durability, modularity, and noise absorption performance.
Enclosed within compact trailers or converted vans, these command units generate continuous noise from communication servers, HVAC blowers, power inverters, and external interference. Wall and ceiling surfaces, often metallic or laminate, reflect sound rather than absorb it—leading to prolonged reverb.
To address this, the team retrofitted internal walls with acoustic perforated panels configured for mid-frequency absorption. These were strategically placed around operator stations and briefing zones to enhance spoken word clarity.
The panels used in this deployment featured a 2.5mm thick perforated aluminum sheet with 25% open area. Each panel was bonded to a multi-layer core consisting of PET foam and sound-damping vinyl, then secured to a vibration-isolated aluminum frame. This design allowed integration into prefabricated wall and ceiling panels.
Floor access hatches and ramps were finished with anti-slip perforated panels to ensure both acoustic control and operator safety. These surfaces further reduced structure-borne sound from foot traffic and trolley movement.
Acoustic field tests using speech intelligibility metrics showed:
Reduction of reverberation time from 0.9s to 0.31s in critical frequency ranges
Internal noise floor lowered by 14dB(A) across operating bandwidth
Operator speech clarity increased by 29% based on STI ratings
All measurements followed protocols outlined in ISO 3382-2 and ASTM E2235.
The materials and methods have also been successfully adapted for: communications tent interiors, command vans with satellite uplinks, and first responder support trailers.
