Backup generators are essential for maintaining power during emergencies, but they generate significant noise—especially in urban environments. This case explores how perforated aluminum sheets were used to reduce the noise from a critical backup generator cabin located in a busy industrial park in Tokyo.
Diesel generators are known to produce low-frequency noise and high decibel levels, which can disrupt surrounding areas. The typical noise levels range from 75-85dB(A) at full load, making soundproofing a crucial concern for noise-sensitive environments. Engineers designed a solution to minimize both airborne and structure-borne sound transmissions using acoustic perforated panels.
The perforated aluminum sheets used in the design were 3mm thick with a 25% open area ratio. The panels were arranged in a modular layout around the generator unit, with additional insulation layers of PET foam and mineral wool behind the panels for better sound absorption. The front and side walls of the cabin were fully covered with perforated acoustic panels to prevent sound leakage.
For ease of installation and maintenance, the panels were designed for quick attachment and detachment, allowing for easy access to the generator and its components. The roof of the generator cabin was also treated with anti-slip perforated panels to minimize noise reflection and ensure safety when technicians access the unit.
Acoustic tests conducted after installation showed a remarkable reduction in noise levels:
Sound reduction of 16dB(A) at operator ear level
Reduction in low-frequency hum (below 125Hz) by 12dB
Enhanced speech intelligibility around the cabin perimeter
The system passed the testing requirements as outlined by ASTM E90 and ISO 3382-2 for industrial environments.
