The team used 3mm perforated aluminum sheets with a 22% open area, allowing for efficient sound absorption while maintaining the visual appeal of the organ area. These panels were installed behind the organ pipes, strategically positioned around the room to trap high-frequency reflections while maintaining the instrument's powerful tone.
The panels were mounted on walls and ceilings, with additional anti-slip perforated panels placed along the floor to prevent vibrations from traveling through the building structure. The modular design allowed for easy adjustments based on acoustic testing and room configuration.
After installation, measurements showed a significant improvement in acoustic performance:
Reverberation time (RT60) reduced by 0.5 seconds in the organ pipe area
Clarity of high frequencies increased by 15%
Reduced bass boom and muddiness in the sanctuary by 9dB
These results were verified through acoustic testing based on ASTM E1050 and ISO 11654 standards for acoustic absorption.
The success of the Milan installation has led to similar projects in other sacred spaces, including: cathedral choirs, organ lofts, and worship halls where acoustic performance and aesthetic preservation are both critical.
