This article discusses how perforated aluminum sheets were used to significantly reduce noise in a    commercial ice machine room, ensuring a quieter working environment in a hotel in Las Vegas.

📌 Noise Challenges in Ice Machine Areas

Ice machines generate significant mechanical noise, especially during ice production and ejection phases. The noise levels can reach    over 80dB(A) at close range, affecting nearby equipment and disturbing workers. The challenge was to contain this noise within the machine area    without reducing the machine’s efficiency or access to the cooling components.

🧱 Perforated Panel Design and Installation

The solution involved 2.8mm perforated aluminum sheets with a 27% open area, strategically placed on the walls surrounding the machine.    Behind the perforated sheets, 40mm of PET foam and mineral wool insulation was used to absorb both high and low frequencies, significantly reducing    the transmission of noise through the walls. The aluminum panels also provided an additional barrier to vibrations caused by the machines' motors.

The modular nature of the panels allowed for easy installation and removal for maintenance. The walls of the room were lined with the    acoustic perforated panels, and additional anti-slip perforated panels were added to the floor area to isolate vibration from the machine.

🛠 Testing and Performance Results

After installation, the noise levels dropped from 82dB(A) to 65dB(A) at operator stations. The solution achieved:

  • 13dB(A) reduction in low-frequency hum from the compressor

  • Improved noise isolation during the ice dispensing process

  • Enhanced speech intelligibility in the vicinity of the ice machine room

These results met the standards set by ASTM E90 and ISO 3382-2.
