A resort chain in Southeast Asia faced a costly challenge—aging outdoor speaker units installed poolside and along walkways were leaking during monsoon season. The original grilles, designed only for dust protection, failed under tropical rain exposure. Moisture entered the housing, corroding wires, muffling speaker cones, and leading to total system failure within 2–3 years.
Replacing entire speaker systems would cost upwards of $120,000. Facility engineers sought a smarter retrofit option: a grill upgrade that could waterproof existing units while maintaining acoustic transparency for music and announcements.
Our solution utilized a multi-layered aluminum and polymer composite mesh grille, engineered to block direct water ingress while allowing high-frequency transmission. The core material was perforated 5052-H32 aluminum layered with an ePTFE acoustic membrane bonded via ultrasonic welding.
Perforation: 1.2 mm circular holes at 2.0 mm pitch (36% open area)
Membrane: 25μm expanded PTFE, certified under ISO 20696 acoustic membrane standards
Mesh: Anodized finish with salt-resistant UV coating (ASTM G154 compliant)
Audio performance was verified using test tones and frequency sweeps from 100Hz–16kHz with ASA validation models.
50 speaker units were retrofitted in under 48 hours using pre-fitted snap-lock ring adapters. The grills came with integrated silicon seals that created an IPX5-rated barrier, keeping out water while preserving bass and treble clarity. No rewiring was needed, and aesthetics were improved with matte black and brushed silver options.
Six months later, after peak storm season, inspections showed zero water intrusion. Maintenance savings were recorded at 74%, and guest feedback reported clearer music and announcements around pools and gardens. Unlike standard grilles, our design integrates:
Vibration-dampening perimeter frame
Non-rusting brackets
Acoustic-resilient hydrophobic materials
This performance exceeds requirements for ASCE public sound systems and matches durability ratings per Architectural Digest’s Outdoor Hardware Guide.
If your outdoor audio systems are still functional but vulnerable to the elements, our acoustic mesh grill retrofits are the ideal defense. Quick to install, engineered to endure, and built to sound clear even in the wettest climates.
