In 2022, the municipal Urban Mobility Authority in a coastal Southeast Asian city launched an initiative to deploy standalone smart kiosks throughout transportation hubs, aiming to improve access to public transit data, recharge services, and Wi-Fi. However, by mid-2023, complaints surged due to the interior overheating of these kiosks. Touchscreens lagged, routers failed in mid-day heat, and maintenance costs surged.
Initial kiosk prototypes used clear acrylic canopies and no airflow management. Ambient temperatures averaging 36°C created internal highs of 52°C. Polycarbonate enclosures magnified solar gain while stagnant interiors blocked heat escape, making passive cooling impossible. Components began warping, with the touchscreen manufacturer citing operating failures past 45°C.
Our team introduced a modular system combining vertical and horizontal metal sunshade panels with perforated side and rear ventilation cladding. This Standalone Kiosk Metal Sunshade and Passive Ventilation Panel Set was developed in line with ASTM E84 flame-spread requirements and ISO 6946 insulation standards. The design ensured thermal redirection while creating continuous airflow zones, drastically improving enclosure climate.
